Reception

At Elmhurst, Reception is far more than a starting point. It is where confidence grows, curiosity flourishes and the foundations for future academic success are carefully established.

Many of our children transition seamlessly from Little Elmhurst into Reception, already familiar with the routines, values and warmth of school life. We are equally experienced in welcoming pupils joining us for the first time and pride ourselves on creating a nurturing, secure and happy environment in which every child quickly feels known and valued.

Our highly skilled teaching staff and dedicated teaching assistants enable children to thrive both academically and socially. Through carefully planned learning experiences, specialist teaching and purposeful play, pupils develop independence, resilience and a genuine love of learning from the very beginning.

Learning in Reception is ambitious, engaging and tailored to the individual child. Early reading, phonics, writing and mathematical understanding are taught with rigour and care, ensuring pupils make excellent progress while developing confidence in their own abilities. Small group teaching and personalised support allow every child to be challenged appropriately and encouraged to achieve their potential.

Beyond the classroom, Reception pupils benefit from the breadth of an Elmhurst education. Specialist teaching in areas such as sport, music and the creative arts enriches each week, while opportunities including Forest School, performances, swimming and enrichment activities encourage children to explore new interests and talents.

Strong partnerships with parents are central to our approach. Regular communication, workshops and opportunities to share in school life ensure parents feel fully involved in their child’s learning journey and development.

At Elmhurst, we believe brilliant beginnings matter. Our Reception provision combines outstanding pastoral care with ambitious academic foundations, preparing children not only for a successful transition into Key Stage 1, but for a lifelong love of learning.
